Where It Started

From One Van
to a Vision

I left school at fifteen and went to work for my uncle. At the time he had one van — a battered thing with a broken window. I watched him build from that single vehicle into landscape gardening, then waste removal, and eventually into the successful skip hire company he runs today. That journey was the best education I ever got. Not in a classroom — in what it actually takes to build something from nothing and make it last.

That's been my compass ever since. When it came to starting Social Shift, I wasn't looking for shortcuts or someone else's playbook. I was looking for a real problem worth solving — and I found one right here in Calderdale.

The Problem We Solved

That Bargain Wasn't
a Bargain Anymore

You know that feeling. You spot something on Facebook Marketplace — perfect condition, great price — and then you try to arrange delivery and someone quotes you twenty quid before they've even left the house. Suddenly it's not a bargain. It's just expensive.

The alternative? A taxi — but a taxi charges you for two journeys. There and back. You're paying double for a one-way job.

That gap between buyer and seller was the problem Social Shift was built to close. We go to the seller, we pick it up, we bring it to you. Simple, honest, and fair. No inflated rates, no double-billing.

The name came naturally. It started as a marketplace collection service — something inherently social — but we've always thought of ourselves as a social business in the broader sense. We're out in the community every day. We're part of it.

We don't just move things from A to B. We take the time to stop, say hello, and actually check in with people. Our eyes and ears are always open out there. We know that for some people, a knock on the door and a quick chat might be the only conversation they have all day — and we never forget that.

That's the kind of business Social Shift is. We're community-based because we choose to be, not because it's a marketing line.

Having spent years automating home systems and building custom workflows, Andy built Social Shift's entire back-end infrastructure from scratch — booking systems, customer communications, vendor management, automated workflows, and more. If something needs changing, we change it. No waiting on third parties, no mystery plugins. A system we understand end to end, built to serve you properly.

Couriers Don't Do

There's a lot that happens behind the scenes at Social Shift that you won't find anywhere else. Not because it's complicated — but because most companies simply don't think this way.

⭐ Customer Recognition

We Notice When You Go the Extra Mile

Everyone talks about reviewing businesses. But who reviews the customers? At Social Shift, our riders have the ability to flag a customer who's gone out of their way — whether that's always being ready at the door, leaving a kind note, or having a brew waiting on a cold morning.

That flag comes straight to the office. We'll follow it up — whether that's a thank-you call, a discount on their next delivery, or just making sure they know we noticed. It costs nothing to be decent, and we think it deserves to be recognised.

🛡️ Rider Safety Protocol

No Rider Gets Left in an Uncomfortable Situation

If a rider arrives at a delivery and something doesn't feel right — the address seems off, the situation feels unsafe — they don't have to carry on. One tap sends a silent notification to the office, and the delivery is immediately placed on hold. Not cancelled. On hold.

We then contact the customer directly, explain the situation calmly, and work out a resolution — whether that's a safe alternative meeting point with a small discount offered, or rescheduling for the following morning. The rider is taken care of. The customer is taken care of. Everyone moves forward.

🌧️ Shelter In Place

Bad Weather Doesn't Mean a Cancelled Delivery

Calderdale is famous for it — ten minutes of horizontal rain, then sunshine. When the weather turns nasty or a road becomes impassable, we don't cancel and reschedule your delivery to next week. We put it on hold.

Our riders are instructed to find shelter and wait. The office monitors the situation. As soon as conditions improve and the route is clear, deliveries resume. Your parcel gets to you today — just slightly later than planned. That's a promise most couriers won't make.

🗺️ Live Ground Intelligence

Our Riders Are Our Routing System

Smart routing isn't just an algorithm. Every rider on the road is an intelligence asset — reporting back on obstructions, road closures, flooding, and anything else that affects movement across Calderdale. That information feeds directly into how we route every job.

We're building this out further — eventually opening up our back-end routing infrastructure as an API for smaller local businesses who use their own vans and need the same intelligence we've built for ourselves.

Eco Slots — Coming Soon

We're working on something new. Eco Slots are discounted delivery windows generated by routes we're already running — if we're heading your way anyway, you'll be able to grab that slot at a reduced rate. First come, first served, and only available when the route genuinely makes sense. Smarter logistics, fairer pricing. Watch this space.
